On.12.02.2005 a road accident occurred at Sonapur, which is located 25 KMs away from Guwahati, at around 6.35 P.M. According to eyewitness accounts, a local bus was speeding in the middle of the road, causing the jeep to break abruptly to avoid a collision. The jeep then swerved and hit a tree, causing it to overturn. Tragically, the driver of the jeep, Ananta Das, aged 35, was killed instantly. On 8.02.2009 a daring robbery took place at the United Bank Branch in Sonapur, which is located 25 km away from Guwahati, at around 11:30 AM. According to eyewitness accounts, four armed robbers arrived in a jeep and looted a sum of fifteen lakhs from the bank. During the robbery, the cashier resisted the robbers and was shot at, sustaining injuries. The robbers managed to escape from the scene before the police arrived.
